Still a Pay Gap Between Men and Women

The White House recently released a report entitled Women in America: Indicators of Social and Economic Well-Being. This report basically confirmed all stereotypes of struggling women in today’s America. Now, I know from personal experience (there are more men than women in our large family) that men scoff at the idea that sexism is the last acceptable prejudice. I have actually been shouted down at the dinner table before. I think they don’t want to face another accusation of an “-ism” that would indicate they need to change. Men hate change you know.

Anyway, here is the upshot of the report:

1. “Most adults live in households headed by married couples; single-mother households are more common than single-father households.” While it’s good news that most households are headed by married couples (given America’s horrible, although improving, divorce rates) who here didn’t know there were more single mothers? Anyone? Anyone? I have a hard time getting my husband to watch the kids for an evening to go out with my sisters. Permanent solitary custody? No way my friend!

2. “Women are more likely than men to be in poverty.” Right. We don’t get paid as much!! That’s the whole point! We’re more likely to be raising the kids alone but less likely to be paid as well! Which leads me to my next point:

3. “Higher percentages of women than men participate in adult education.” Well, when you’re divorced and the sole provider for your kids, you need to be educated in order to get a j-o-b! “Homemaker for 11 years” cannot typically be counted as work experience, no matter how you dress it up! (yeah, “CEO of a small business,” I’m talking to you!)

4. “More women than men have earned a graduate education.” Again, this speaks to women feeling like they have to do twice as much, twice as well, in order to get decent pay and/or to get recognized.

5. “More women than men work part-time….” This is a no-brainer: men want the second income but they don’t want to increase their own household participation. Therefore, the compromise is that women work part-time in order to have enough time to continue to cook and clean and run errands. This goes hand in hand with number 6: “In families where both husband and wife are employed, employed wives spend more time on household activities than do employed husbands.” Told ya!

Common Causes of Divorce

There are many reasons why people want a divorce. It could be easy to put a reason for the sake of supporting a divorce petition. In reality though, there may be hundreds of unique reasons why certain couples just want out. Sometimes, there is more that just one reason. Here are only some of the possible causes of divorce:

Communication Problems

A couple may already be experiencing communication problems even before their marriage. Expectations may not have been made clear or certain issues that could affect a marriage were not brought up. Discussing feelings about aspects that are personally important is also crucial but may not always be practiced by couples. Some couples may put little weight on pre-marital issues only to realize during marriage that they should have clearly set things in black and white or that hey should have been better listeners. Communication issues before marriage can get worse after getting married.

Financial Issues

Another major cause of disagreement between married couples is, of course, financial matters. Married couples could squabble over such issues as shared financial responsibility, unequal financial status, undisclosed financial state, over spending and lack of financial support. Evidence suggests though that money is not always the sole or primary cause of divorce. Nonetheless, it is still a significant factor. Again, the lack of communication over financial issues is the real culprit here and not money per se.

Forms of Abuse

All forms of abuse are possible causes of divorce. This does not just include intentional and habitual physical battery. Abuse may also come in the form of sexual abuse and emotional abuse. One partner may actively seek to degrade his/her partner through harsh language.

In some cases, abuse can also be in the form of a spouse abusing drugs or alcohol or excessive gambling. There may be no physical or verbal abuse but the other partner would understandably have a difficult time managing finances and daily life with an addicted spouse.

Marital Infidelity

Marriage is a mutually exclusive arrangement between two parties. This is of course unless both partners privately consent on their own to see other people while remaining married to each other. Otherwise, one may seek to divorce a spouse if evidence of infidelity is clearly obtained.

Sexual Problems

One essential aspect of marriage is sex. Couples are expected to consummate or perform the act. That is unless a person knows and accepts before marriage that one partner has some sexual problems. In some cases, sexual dysfunction or disinterest may begin after tying the knot. If a couple is unable to resolve this, it may become a reason for divorce.

Studies on divorce show that this is one common cause of divorce between a couple. There are however numerous kinds and forms of incompatibility. A couple may be incompatible in anything and everything. They may not be able to find a common ground sexually, intellectually and emotionally. In cases of incompatibility, it might just be unbearable to live life with someone you just can’t fit with.

Top Marriage Advice Blog,, Announces Ways to Rekindle a Romance

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) April 12, 2012 is quickly becoming one of the world’s most read marriage advice blogs. Offering daily tips and advice for married couples across the globe, information can be read directly from their blog, or via a daily digest email.

In their latest blog post, Ed and Cathy Lorient discuss ways to rekindle a romance. The new blog post is titled, “Rekindle Your Romance with 4 Little Words.”

The blog post can be accessed here:

Ed and Cathy start by explaining the possible over-use of the word “I love you.”

“Because we use those three little words so casually, they’ve lost much of their impact. They can be interpreted as an afterthought or automatic response,” they say.

They then link their readers to an interesting list of "150 Reasons Why I Love You," an article which was created by a husband with a very loved wife.

Taking inspiration from this article, Ed and Cathy then introduce readers to something new that they have been trying in their own marriage.

They suggest that, for the next few weeks, their readers should refrain from using the three word phrase "I love you" and instead try using four words and saying "I love you because."

“We did it for several weeks and not only saw a real improvement in our romantic life but had a blast doing it,” Ed and Cathy add.

They make it clear to their readers that reasons given for loving the other person can be serious as well as fun, light and humorous. They suggest that anything can be said, as long as it is true.

“The point is that we all need to hear WHY we’re loved by our spouses. We need to know that the things we do, the people we are and the traits we possess are acknowledged and needed and appreciated by our partners,” they say.

They conclude the blog post by once again suggesting that their readers try the new four word "I love you" phrase.

Causes of High Divorce Rates for Generation Y

Domestic violence is one of the factors that lead to high divorce rates in Generation Y marriages. Moreover, domestic violence is not an uncommon occurrence in Generation Y marriages. Domestic violence is any form of attack imposed on a family member by another, and this assault causes physical or emotional harm. In an article in South Wales Echo, Paula Hardy, the Chief Executive of Welsh Women’s Aid explains that many people limit domestic violence to the physical component, and they forget that emotional harm is also a form of domestic violence (Alford). This limitation is the main reason why many marriages affected by domestic violence do not last long. Domestic violence occurs in Generation Y marriages mainly when the victim has children out of marriage, the abuser falsely accuses a spouse of unfaithfulness, or when the abuser is under the influence of alcohol or other illegal drugs. Generally, women are the most vulnerable to domestic violence. Many Women tolerate domestic violence for a long time either because they are not aware that they are victims of domestic violence or because of fear that their action will result into more problems in their marriage. These women forget that there is a higher possibility that their husbands will assault them again, and they are willing to remain in their already failing marriages. After a long period of tolerating domestic abuse, these women give up on trying to protect their marriages and then file for divorce, or they are forced to file for divorce by their abusers.

Lack of maturity is the main cause of increasing divorce rates among the Net-Generation marriages. The number of young marriages is on the rise currently. Most young people get married without any knowledge about how to maintain a functional family. Divorce is not one of the challenges that strike Generation Y couples’ minds before they get married. Tara S. Pellegrino, a student lawyer, states, “The large majority of young couples enter this [marriage] with a sense of perceived invincibility, an ‘it can’t happen to us’ mentality that blinds them to the reality that divorce, not death, is the more probable end to the fairy tale.” Many Generation Y teenagers are used to having their parents give them all they need, so they do not think that getting married comes with some responsibilities. At adolescence, many teenagers are usually rebellious and unwilling to listen to their parents’ advice, so when they decide to get married no one has control over their decisions. In their marriages, young couples often face challenges like child rearing, financial insufficiencies, and inability to tolerate their partners’ behaviors. These challenges are the realities about marriage, which most Generation Y couples only realize after getting married. Mary Myrick, a National Health Marriage Resource Center Project Director, says, “There is often a disconnect between attitudes about marriage and the reality of getting or being married” (qtd. in “Young Adults”). Young couples accept the truth about marriage when they are finally married and experience the challenges in marriage. When many young married couples finally find out that marriage involves more than just happiness, they start thinking over the decisions they made, and decide to get divorced because they are too young to think of other problem-solving techniques.

When asked why they decided to end their marriage, most of Generation Y divorced couples, either directly or indirectly, give domestic violence or lack of maturity as the reason. Divorce is not a good trend in a society that is focusing on moving forward. According to Professor Andrew Cherlin of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the impacts of divorce are usually evident in a marriage even before the actual breakup, and the children are harmed during their parents’ “conflict” (McGourt). Many children with divorced parents do not get good parenting because of their parents’ differences. Consequently, lack of good parenting increases the children’s vulnerability to peer pressure, and they may end up abusing drugs, being violent, or following through their parents’ footsteps. If this trend persists, there will be no more role models for the coming generations. Therefore, it is important that everybody works towards decreasing the already high divorce rates among Generation Y married couples.

The Best Way to Stop Divorce

Stop a divorce as much as possible That”s one rule that most married couples abide by for the sake of their children and the immediate family members who can get affected by the separation

Stop a divorce as much as possible. That”s one rule that most married couples abide by for the sake of their children and the immediate family members who can get affected by the separation. The worst scenario could lead to the problems of broken homes and demoralizing children in the family. So it is only necessary for married couples to avoid getting divorced. If the relationship can still be worked out, why not work it out? Isn”t it best to try and make things work?

To stop fighting is one of the best things to do to stop divorce. Simple disagreements lead to serious disputes without respect and consideration. Consider the important fact that everybody commits mistakes at least once in a while. So to make things better, considering the spouse”s opinions or conditions would only be a good step forward. Respect is also very necessary that without which, proper communication wouldn”t be possible at all.

For women, threatening and nagging the husband isn”t at all respectful. Divorce is neither a good bribe nor a good trade. It isn”t a good motivation as well. Women should learn how to control themselves and should avoid yelling or running away. Sometimes, menstrual period is reasoned for this behavior; however, such occurrence can be avoided by simply having an open mind. Whether in a menstrual cycle or not, one has the power to control by simply having the will power to embrace amity.

If love”s the issue, the best way to stop divorce is to establish a good and honest communication in the relationship. When it comes to love affair, consultation could help ease the doubts or misunderstanding. Confrontation as well makes it easier to determine if the spouse concerned is being honest or not. If something is totally wrong, do not pretend. Honesty with ones feelings is only important otherwise, it would only create a series of lies thereby.

Being calm also helps ease the tension so try to be calm. To stop divorce, one must do away with the nonsense fighting. Fighting with each other is not good especially in front of the children. Always consider the sake of the children.

To stop divorce is the same way as stopping the almost impossible. However, in due time, it could be the best choice. It could lead to a happy family and best of all; the moral fiber of the children still stays with the family. It”s truly difficult to stop divorce but with the truest desire of keeping the family whole and happy everything is possible.

A lot of people would have resorted immediately to divorce without amicable settlement first. The result is that the relationship ends, the family broken and the children”s pain are never mended. The best way to stop divorce is to stop being hasty and thinking that the good relationship isn”t recoverable. Imminently, problems are never truly solved with divorce. It just starts more problems as another course of action is taken. To stop divorce is to stop it all!

7 Steps in Getting Him to Propose

It can sometimes be irritating in a relationship when your boyfriend refuses to commit to a marriage. Men can be very shifty when it comes to getting married or even speaking about it. By learning his thoughts, perhaps you can help ease him into marriage. These are some of the factors that men have trouble on when it comes to getting married.

Let him know he can’t disappoint

What may be stopping him may be unrelated to marriage, his fear of failure. Where people watch fifty percent of relationships ending in divorce, it’s no wonder why he may be frightened of failing you, his life, and his marriage. After all, fear can now and then impair our judgement. It’s vital to take this fear into account when realizing a guy’s fear of getting married.

To counter his worries, some good old hope is needed. What’s needed is to comfort his fear of failing, and encouraging his ability to keep you happy in a life together for the rest of your lives.

The stress that comes with money

When marriage comes up, guys don’t have the same ideas women do. Men usually think about the cost of a wedding more so than the romance and the meaning of it. What’s desirable is to shift his emphasis off of the financial worries of marriage and onto the meaning of it.

This is done by letting him know that you’re flexible about leaving out some of the more exorbitant expenses when it comes to the wedding and being married. Weddings can be costly, which may not be what he wants. He may be old fashioned and just want a less expensive wedding. This could be why he is hesitant to getting married.

Give him space

Men can easily take for granted what’s in front of them. Not only that, if you are giving him too much focus, he could be receiving the impression that this is what it’s going to be like for the rest of his life married to you. Stop giving him so much focus, and stop smothering him. This will give him room to breathe, come back to the relationship feeling revived, and allow him to miss and want your attention.

Help him perceive your bright future together

People need ambitions and hope to look forward to in life otherwise they will grip to the present. You need to show him that marriage is a fantastic and good goal to anticipate in his life. Men aren’t like women in that they don’t grow up thinking and planning their marriage in their child years. Men usually grow up with other directions and dreams in life.

Goals in your marriage need to be put in front of him, and give him something to anticipate in your life together. Help him to perceive; your honeymoon together, living in a new place together, family in a few years, and other matters married couples look forward to together. Men can’t just be pushed into marriage; they need to be pulled, using hope and goals to look forward to in marriage.

Your love for him

Some men imagine that they are being used when it comes to getting married. They believe that women grow up dreaming of getting married to a guy, and the only reason that you want to marry him is because he happens to be in that position of fulfilling your dreams.

Remind him of your love for him, which is the end goal of marriage. A clear difference has to be made that you are in love with him, and other factors don’t contribute so much when it comes to your reasons of getting married.

The little things

Men can be lazy at times and the thought of organizing a wedding can be discouraging. He may have plans to marry you, but the details of a wedding and the arranging that takes place along with the ceremony is something that he is not looking forward to. Remember that guys don’t find arranging weddings as thrilling and aren’t as fascinated in the small details as women are.

Don’t bring up all the small details of planning a wedding with him, and keep all the small details that you want away from his eyes. These are matters that will only delay him from proposing.

Give him the right examples

While you have been talking of feelings of marriage in his ear, his buddies may have been explaining to him not to get married. Their jokes about marriage may be impacting on his desire to get married more than his love could.

Not only that, but because of the many sloppy separations and break ups that people observe growing up, marriage may have a bad connotation in his mind.

This is why healthy illustrations of marriage need to be put in front of him. Happily married couples, old couples that have spent a lifetime together, kids, and couples that are still in love even after all the obstacles marriage can throw at them. These are issues that will promote him towards marriage, and what he should be focusing on.

There are many thoughts that go through a man’s head that stop them from getting married. In order to get him to propose, you need to be aware of what he’s feeling and comfort his fears with the correct things to say. By doing so, you can help him desire to get married.

Financial Problems in a Marriage

It is said that marriage is the best thing that can happen to two people in love. It is true, provided the spouses understand each other and are aware of the responsibilities that come with marriage. However, married life can suffer a setback, if there are financial issues in a relationship and the partners do not work it out properly to solve these problems. In studies conducted by experts, financial issues have been included as one of the top reasons for a divorce. So, it is always better to be aware of financial problems, if any, and find effective ways to deal with them.

Monetary Issues and Their Solutions

Handling Finance This is one of the basic issues that married couples face. They are not clear about whose salary should be used for household expenses and whose should go in for savings. Lack of planning leads to confusion, ultimately resulting in differences between a couple.

Solution: Couples should try different ways to handle their finances and check which one works the best for them. According to surveys, around 64% of couples have joint accounts, 14% of them have separate accounts, and 18% of couples have both joint as well as separate accounts. There is no particular method to handle finances; it depends on a couple as to how much they want to spend and how much they want to save. So, sit down to decide among yourselves, and make the best call for your future.

Excessive SpendingAmong the various money-related problems affecting a marriage, spending habit is a contentious issue. Many a time, one of the partners is inclined to shop and spend more than the total earnings with the help of loans and credit cards. Mounting bills and high interest rates can really make things difficult for the family.

In certain cases, among the two partners, the wife mostly has the habit of presenting her family with goodies every now and then. The expenditure made, might irritate the other partner and ultimately give rise to arguments.

Solution: Couples should fix a budget for the month and keep a check so that the expenditure does not exceed the limit. As far as possible, use of multiple cards should be avoided. When going through tough financial times, couples need to cut down on entertainment and leisure expenses. Wives and even husbands, if either is into the habit of buying unwanted gifts, should keep away from doing so. This is because, occasional exchange of gifts does not affect, as much as the usual ones do.

Mounting DebtsSometimes while making hasty decisions, it might happen that married couples tend to apply for house loans or car loans without figuring out their repayment capacity. Apart from that, some are even in a habit of using credit cards in excess. This negligence in handling money leads to rising debts which becomes difficult to repay in future.

Solution: Taking loans only as per one’s need and repayment capacity, is the first solution to avoid the problem of mounting debts. One should have realistic aspirations and dreams, and think twice before applying for loans and pledging assets with the lenders. And, if both the spouses are working, they should contribute equally to pay off the EMIs.

Improper InvestmentsIn order to lead a settled life, couples have to think about their future and secure it. Investment done inappropriately is one of the prime factors to be looked into, especially when you have a family to take care of. For this, couples have to make precise investments and while doing so, they have to be careful as it might be a risky affair.

Solution: Couples should figure out the investment goal and time frame, and make sure to review their investments at least once a year.

Unnecessary ExpensesLove is blind and people in love know no boundaries when it comes to spending for each other. They tend to buy expensive stuff in order to please their respective partners. This act of unwanted splurging causes problems later on, and couples start blaming each other for mismanagement of money.

Solution: In order to avoid financial hassles, couples should refrain themselves from buying expensive gifts and going for lavish holidays. As is rightly said “cut your coat according to your cloth” couples should spend according to their capacity.

CrisisAn unstable monetary situation arises due to the lack of savings for your future use. An accident, a major illness or an unexpected pink slip, or any other emergency – all situations which require you to dole out a large sum of money – can land you in peril.

Solution: Problems are unavoidable and can never be predicted. So, instead of waiting for the problem to arise, couples should keep themselves prepared for the bad times. They should make sure that they have an emergency savings account. They should plan their monthly savings together along with a target amount to be saved every month, so that they have enough in hand when a sudden need arises.

Ego ClashesThis is the age where women have caught up with men in every field and are the breadwinners. These days, in many households, we can find women earning more than men which hurts the male ego to a great extent, and if a man is jobless then the situation gets even worse. In such cases, it becomes really difficult to save the relation, as both the partners have their self-pride and none of them is ready to bow down.

Solution: Marriage is a union of two souls and bodies, so couples should treat each other as one. To avoid ego clashes, men should see situations in a broader perspective, and instead of getting offended by their respective wives’ earnings, they should encourage them to work. After all, whoever earns, eventually the income will be utilized for the family.

Keeping Financial SecretsThis is undoubtedly one of the biggest financial problems in a marriage. Many spouses are seen hiding their financial documents, bank account statements and information about their assets, which can be frustrating for the other spouse.

Solution: It is always better to speak the truth, and show all your financial details to your partner. By doing so, your better half would be able to suggest ways of dealing with finances, if need be.

  • A family begins with ‘We’ and not ‘I’. So, while dealing with money matters, always remember that you should think for the well-being of your family.
  • If your problems are too big, take suggestions from a financial planner.
  • When you commit to managing finances, fulfill it at any cost, because the other person relies on you.
  • Think before you spend, because money should be used wisely.
  • Try to avoid interference from relatives in your family finances (if any).
  • Don’t be jealous of a higher-earning spouse. Instead, motivate your partner to do well in his/her career and earn even more.

Marriage is a lifetime commitment, so never ignore the petty issues. Financial issues can be resolved easily, so do not waste time crabbing about it. Your family’s betterment and future depends on the same.

Note.- The suggestions given here are just for better understanding of family financial planning. You need to assess your financial situation and take decisions on your own by being responsible for them.
